Where the Last Birds Stand is a powerful dance duet by Peeled Collective, created and performed by Emma Hanekroot and Emma Versluys. This work was commissioned by Museum Arnhem, inspired by their exhibition Ontmoeten (January 25, 2025 – December 31, 2027), and draws on two striking artworks from the museum's collection: one by Carel Willink and one by Stéphanie Roland.
The duet captures the oppressive, unsettling atmosphere of both artists' works. The desolate landscapes depicted in the paintings evoke a sense of impending doom—an environment where menace and desolation loom large. In this dance, two marabous from Willink's painting stand on a piece of land that, according to Roland’s vision, will soon be consumed by rising waters. The question emerges: Will they stay, hoping the sea will spare them? Or will they take flight, uncertain of whether they will ever find a safe haven beyond the relentless, swallowing sea? They face an irreversible choice—one that will determine their fate forever.
Where the Last Birds Stand is a powerful exploration of the tension between holding on and letting go, between protecting and saying goodbye. It poses a deeply personal question: What happens when you have to leave a place that is dear to you? When you must part with what you love, not knowing what lies beyond?
This performance invites us to reflect on our own choices in the face of loss, change, and survival.
